Planning a wedding in difficult economic times

February 5th, 2009

It can seem daunting to plan a wedding during such  bleak economic times.  No one wants to be too ostentatious during a time when many people are losing their jobs.  However, remember that people always enjoy a good party.  You can keep your registry to less expensive gifts so guests don’t feel obligated to purchase a very expensive gift.

On the other side of the coin, it may be that you have had to reevaluate your wedding budget and are now looking for ways to keep costs low.  One great idea is to have a wedding on a Friday, Sunday or even a Monday.  Many venues are offering “week day” wedding packages.  The fee is quite a bit less than you would pay on a prime day such as the traditional Saturday.  Some brides worry that it puts an unfair burden on guests who have to come in from out of town.  If, however, you decide to go this route, perhaps you could just have a very small ceremony with close friends and family ~ with champagne and wedding cake.  Further down the road, you could have a larger party and invite out of town friends to enjoy a celebration of your marriage.  You could even have a video of your ceremony playing during the party.

Destination weddings are also an option.  Many cruise ships and airlines are offering great pricing on travel right now.  Invite close friends and family; honeymoon at the same or near the resort at which you get married.

In spite of difficult times, couples still get married.  We can’t let the economy interfer with our plans. People get married during good times and bad times.  Life goes on.
