Happy Memorial Day Weekend
This has been a very busy weekend for An Elegant Affair. We had a wedding in Winston-Salem, NC on Saturday and one in Durham, NC on Sunday. Increasingly, couples are choosing long weekends when most of their guests are traveling from out of state. It gives them more travel time.
Our Sunday couple, had most of their family and friends coming here from New York City area. We had the reception at the Hilton RTP which was perfect. All the guests were able to stay at the hotel for the weekend and enjoy the reception without any traveling (except to the church for the ceremony). The bride choose a beautiful color scheme of deep lilac, silver chargers, pink hydrangeas and white tulips. We used black chivari chairs with black cushion and silver napkins. The overall look was very sharp. We also had custom lighting which enhanced the ballroom and helped create a romantic look. I tell all my brides ~ never underestimate the importance of lighting. In all the wedding magazines, the look you see created is not just with candles but with “intelligent” lighting too. Its a good investment.
Our Saturday wedding in Winston-Salem was a more intimate event with the parents of the couple traveling from Indonesia and Singapore to be at the wedding which was held at Davis Chapel. The chapel is small and perfect size for their 85 guests. The flowers in the church were all shades of white with a touch of greenery. The reception site was a profusion of color ~ reds, whites, yellow and greenery ~ flowers were hydrangeas, roses, calla lillies in deep chocolate. The bride liked a more modern take on the flowers and the effect was perfect and reflected her unique style.
Two totally different approaches and two stylish weddings reflecting the couples’ tastes. But most importantly everyone had a great time!

I hope all you mothers had a wonderful day on Sunday. I went up to Brooklyn, Connecticut to visit my daughter. She has four children and for the very first time, she and I went out to a Mother’s Day lunch together ALONE! We went a lovely restaurant called The Golden Lamb. It is a farm with acres and acres of land and gardens. They use fresh herbs from the gardens to garnish the menu they serve at the restaurant which is in an old barn with a lovely view of the lake and the grounds.
Brooklyn, Connecticut is part of the state that is called the “quiet corner”. It is, in fact, a rural area with a much slower pace than many other areas of the state. I enjoyed visiting with her and my grandchildren ages 11, 8, 4 and 2. The older I get the more I appreciate family. It is the most important thing we have in life.
